The Route

Lonnie and Eric departed from Cape Discovery, off the coast of Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic. They headed roughly north toward the Pole, which they reach on July 4.

Terrain, and Air Drops

The Arctic sea ice along the northern coast of Canada is subject to a steady, southerly drift, causing it to pile up along the coast in high pressure ridges. As a result, Dupre and Larsen began their journey carrying only about 90 lbs of supplies in their boats, until they have navigated this difficult terrain. Once they passed the pressure ridges, they received an air drop of supplies at approximately 86 degrees of North. Then they pushed slightly west, to compensate for ice drift from west to east, before reaching the Pole.
